The Blended Diet

What is a blended diet?
It is when you blend food in a high power blender and push it through a feeding tube.

What has it achieved for us?
  • Faith's hair has grown
  • Her nails are stronger
  • Her weight increased slowly and stayed on
  • She has a healthy glow to her skin
  • Less daily vomiting
  • Sleeping improved
  • General well-being improved
How often do we blend?
We blend once every two weeks and freeze the blended food. We find this works bests for us.

Blending at our house is a family affair. We all have a job whether buying, cooking, blending, or sieving. It has taken us a long time to find the perfect blend for Faith, but we are at last happy with it.

'Blend Burnout'
The blended diet is hard work and we all get 'blend burnout' every now and then, but it is worth it as we see less vomit and Faith grow. That is the reward for all the hard work.

How we travel with blended food
When we travel we have a car fridge so the blend stays cool and fresh.

Resources we use
This website has great resources. The Homemade Blended Formula Handbook is also available on this site. The Homemade Blended Formula Handbook has a collection of 35 reproducible chapters and 16 food reference charts.  It is written by Marsha Dunn Klein. This book is designed as a reference and “how to” for parents and professionals who together are making the choice to try a homemade blended diet for tube feeding.

Homemade Blended Formula Handbook
Many families who are providing tube feedings for their children have asked, “Why can’t I feed this child the nutrition I feed my other children?” or “What can I offer my child besides the same formula every day?” or “How would I go about providing real blended food through the tube?” or “Can I still use the commercial formula and just add a little food?” or “Where would I start”? This book will help.

Super Nutrition for Babies gives parents the latest science-verified nutritional recommendations for feeding their child. Based on a program used at one of the largest holistic pediatric practices in the country, this book provides information on all aspects of nutrition and feeding, including introducing meat in a child's diet, healthier alternatives to dairy and soy, starting solid foods, establishing a regular eating schedule, dealing with picky eating, and the best foods for every age and stage so your baby gets the best nutrition to minimize illness and optimize sleep, digestion, and brain development.
